21 Tips

These are suggestions developed collaboratively with the pre-service students who have experienced making an E-Portfolio.

  1. Ask a photography major or talented friend to take a professional photo of you.

  2. Use a thesaurus wisely.

  3. Keep your audience in mind.

  4. Use one professional email address.

  5. Be consistent; message, brand, fonts, colors, links open in new window, etc.

  6. Pay attention to details.

  7. Edit, edit, edit; ongoing reflection and review of site.

  8. Include links to your Personal Learning Network (PLN) - facebook, twitter, linkedin, personal blog, pinterest...

  9. Be selective for quality and voice.

  10. Use open source software such as wix or weebly; keep in mind the tools you will have access to beyond college.

  11. Familiarize yourself with support resources for software.

  12. ​View each page of your website as an artwork; make conscious aesthetic choices; use imagery to visually describe your brand.

  13. Look at your site on different platforms to check layout and functionality.

  14. Images viewed online need only be 72 dots per inch (dpi) with a small dimensionality; save as jpeg file format.

  15. Ensure that each webpage has a way to navigate back to other pages - usually maintaining a toolbar is recommended.

  16. All attached/ embedded document files should be pdf file format.

  17. Smaller file sizes load faster.

  18. Select text within pages to link to other pages or outside websites.

  19. Documents that are not originally digital should be scanned for best possible copy - do not photograph.

  20. Create a QR code for your website and put on email signature, business cards, and resume.

  21. Personalize your site professionally.
